Dark Yet Visually Exhilarating. Beautifully Brutal and Yet Still Visceral
Even at the beginning, there's no hint MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is going to a stop. Right at the very start, the engines are already rewing, gathering furious fires of vengeance and redemption, and before the audience could snap out of the sheer moments of brutal grittiness and exhilarating high-octane drama, they are surely already held hostage within the confines of a post-apocalyptic world, where everything is horrendously scarce. Not that it's a bad thing, no it's not. I tell you, this is like being hurled into the space in a roller-coaster ride. It's dangerous, but it's also thrilling. Witnessing this dystopic world and all its hellish drama unfold might make you grope for seatbelt under your seat.

The film shares Max Rockatansky's (Tom Hardy) adventures. Max is an ex highway patrolman. He's been haunted by the past, by family he never saved. He meets the Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) who is being pursued by the dictatorial Wasteland leader "Joe". Furiosa reaches for Max for help in keeping the 'Five Wives'—women she brought with her—into safety, as Joe's deranged breed of warriors called The War Boys, that are barely humans, are raging across the desert to capture them. This pursuit throws the unlikely partners into the whalloping dangers of bloody escape, suddenly sending them into a game of survival.

After a rip-roaring opening chase sequence, Max is held captive in the Citadel, the city where the ruthlessly totalitarian leader "Joe" is ruling over. The grotesquely brutal lord maintains tight grip of every valuable resouces across the land. This brings the entire populace crippling under his control. As for Max, he becomes merely a blood bag for Nux (Nick Hoult) one of Joe's War Boys, who is a fatal devout to the cause of their fascist leader, who has promised them the glory of getting into Valhalla, the promised land.

Everything in this cinematic behemoth screams grandeur, even the feverish chase, even the dark erubescents spurred from the ruthless violence. Miller has molded a world where darkness is an escape from the stream of clichés and retreads, surging into the cinemas, today. It's a visual feast, but surprisingly, with sense. It's explosive in every unimaginable ways, but it's not devoid of a human story, which in this case, is propelled by stellar performances from incredible actors on the movie's payroll. Tom Hardy is utterly capable as the main hero, but the emotional spine of the narrative mostly runs on Theron's character. At some point, there would be a sense that Max isn't the only one playing under the spotlight, as it gets evident Furiosa is equally as massive as his role is. Hardy here is singularly stunning, playing his role with utmost credibility as he is required. His mission transcends past his emotional torments and he's never pulled himself free from the ghosts if his past. Same can be said with Furiosa, who is not only running from Joe because she wants to get herself free from his cut throat grip, but also to bring every woman into safety, back to freedom where they belong.

Much of the movie is spent with furious speed chases that goes from end to end of Joe's subjugated land, while also taking surprising twists and turns along the way. It's like it doesn't know how to stop, and if it does, that's surely only to allow us breathe and catch up with the next electrifying action setpiece. There's an enigmatic style Miller has employed to provide distinctions in his fantasy world, and it keeps the momentum in tack, if not ever progressing. The tone of the movie, all those vividly dark colors, that magically shifts from something to another, imparts a drowning experience, only it's enjoying and looks festive to the eyes. This makes every eye-squashing spectacles take mammoth forms of visual extravaganza, turning all those burning combustions, metal blasts, and endless pursuits, from mere technical marvels into a hair-raising escapade.

Amid these sanity-grabbing action sequences, though, is an emotional streak that keeps Max and Furiousa's humanity alive. This prompts them to survival, into carrying out their similar humane causes, clinging tightly to their only mission even if they get hurled into the barbaric hostilities of their dystopian society. This turns the movie into something visceral, cathartic in some ways that probably only a small fraction of the audience could understand. It will not be enough to merit this achievement with merely a splurge of superlatives. This needs to be experienced, felt, and forever cherished. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, ignites eternal fire, and it will keep burning through the stretches of cinematic history.

User Reviews

Why are these retards allowed to plunder Disney's legacy?
Some fantasy off the wall shows work very well. Roger Rabbit was excellent, Cats was brilliant. Xanadu was boring for me. Even the music was so-so at best. I don't know if anything could have saved it. It lacked cohesion and it felt phony. George Clooney smiled too much - as if he was trying too hard to convince himself he liked what he was doing. Hugh Laurie was superficial. He gave no real sense that his character's feeling were real or even that he had any feelings besides some attitude. Other people liked it, so if you are interested try it. You've got nothing to lose but your childhood. Pointless, plot less, gratuitously filled with PG13 violence. Lacking in any of the charm, sensibility, playfulness of the the book or even the other films. The disco age was coming to a close and people wanted to try and jump on the train one last time. This was a train wreck. The acting is HORRIBLE, the storyline feels like it came off a 70's assembly line and is full of that 70's TV feeling kitsch. It's just really bad, but if your looking for a movie that is so bad it's good-look somewhere else because this is just bad.

This is the Pixar I Know and Love
Please excuse any mistakes as my English is not very good. There are no spoilers in this review.

I had the pleasure of seeing 'Inside Out' at the Cannes Film Festival and I must say it was wonderful and a huge step-up from Pixar's recent efforts. The trailers don't really do it justice. The story may seem complicated for younger viewers, but the way Pixar tells the story fits for both adults and children. The pacing is in the vein of Wall-E, and in that sense it is very much a film for adults as it is for kids (like most Pixar movies). The story here is surprisingly raw and emotional, one that has very deep underlying themes that adults will connect with. Many of the audience members were crying at the end. It has one of the most original stories for an animation in the last few years, and I believe many people (especially adults) will form a connection to it.

Speaking of animation, the film is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a nice contrast of colors that make it look vibrant, like Pixar's 'UP'. The voice cast did a wonderful job and you couldn't ask for better direction from Pete Doctor and co. I cannot wait to see this a second time with family and friends. Highly recommended.

PS: The short that played before the film, 'Lava', was also beautiful. It was sort of a musical, and it was quite funny and clever. The audience even applauded at the end of it, myself included. In that sense, it provides the entire package a nice balance of joy and laughter (Lava) followed by deep storytelling and emotion (Inside Out).

Mortdecai? More like mort de cinema.
Mortdecai has been Depp's fifth box office flop in a row. Johnny Depp's new comedy Mortdecai isn't quite the utter disaster the promos suggest, but it's still a laughless, stupid and pointless affair. Led by Depp's Secret Window director David Koepp, the movie centers on a debonair art dealer (and part-time scoundrel), Charlie Mortdecai, who is tasked by the British Mi5 with recovering a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi riches. It's a simple premise, one that gets twisted and tangled by a messy plot.

As Mortdecai, Depp is in his component - in spite of the fact that it is not so much something to be thankful for. Credit where credit is expected, the performing artist completely focuses on his flashy character and offers a personality and enthusiasm that no one but he could. In some capacity its just about praiseworthy how Depp has the capacity to keep up Mortdecai's smarmy, smooth persona for the whole film. Fifteen minutes of "I say, old bean" and "Kindly my dear" would be all that could possibly be needed, yet sadly it goes ahead like that for an alternate hour and a half.

That being said, whatever remains of the film isn't that entertaining either. The principle running stifler here is Mortdecai's stache, which I figure should be interesting all by itself. Having developed it weeks before the story starts, Depp's character spends the majority of the film protecting the hairs under his nose, essentially to his luxurious wife Johanna (Gwyneth Paltrow). Other than that, the vast majority of the jokes depend on Mortdecai's failure to fight for himself, as he calls upon his trusty steward Jock (Paul Bettany) to battle for him. It's kind of a Clouseau/Cato dynamic, however with no place close to the same measure of appeal. In general, the funniness is low and unsurprising.

Truth be told, the main climactic surprise in this movie here is that Mortdecai had the capacity secure such a high profile celebrity cast. This involves the additions of Paltrow and Bettany, and the film characteristics appearances from Ewan Mcgregor, Olivia Munn and Jeff Goldblum. In any case, with Depp consuming the vast majority of the landscape, whatever remains of the cast gets saddled with negligible, one-note side characters. Especially Goldblum and Munn, who don't even show up until the movie is almost over.

The only other positive thing I can say in regards to Mortdecai is that Koepp's heading is shockingly showy and fun, which in any event keeps the film from being an aggregate waste. Smart organization and smooth camera-work give the story an energetic and flighty feel, while the various scene transitions are checked by noteworthy, globetrotting design. You could probably tell that Koepp and Depp are having a great time with Mortdecai but it is simply a disgrace that we can't appreciate it as well.
